[WHS 2011 - 8GB Ram limit... Options? | [H]ard|Forum](^2^)

Since my mini-ITX HTPC has been collecting dust, I figured take as many parts as possible out of there for the server. I also had several unused hard drives lying around, so I was covered there. The only thing I needed to purchase (aside from the case of course) was RAM as the 2GB RAM I had in my HTPC was insufficient to load Windows Home Server 2011.

Of course what good is a server without an Operating System, so I connected my USB ROM drive to Redemption, loaded my Windows Home Server 2011 disc, and crossed my fingers! Fortunately it installed without any problems.

Hi, my name is Damian, and I'm tech gadget addict! Although I always had some interest in technology, it wasn't until I got my EX470 and more importantly found Mediasmartserver.net, that my interest became an addiction. My goal, aside from world domination and to see the Mets/Broncos win another championship, is to set up the perfect digital home where all my media is available at the click of a button. When I am not writing for Mediasmartserver.net you can find me over at my blog at or follow me on twitter

I have a Technet subscription so it enables me to try things out as you already know. I do not have a personal issue with the price but I know many will either keep what they have or find other solutions which is a sad day for the WHS Communitity and I am not certain if the Foundation version will meet anyones needs provided they can obtain it as its listed as OEM but unclear if it will be made available to the public. MS with WHSv1 and 2011 has made it very affordable and for what you actually get I do not see the newer server software as over priced just more than what most will be willing to pay.

HelloI know it is best not to use a server as a desktop but can you do it with Windows Homes Server 2011. I know that you can do it on other versions of Windows Server using Terminal Services but concerned that Microsoft may have taken something out of the Home version that cripples its capability. I am thinking of primarily of Office 2010, our camera software to download pictures and a few favourite games like Spider Solitare, Freecell, Solitare, and Scrabble. I would use it as my desktop and would set up both an Administrator and a user acccount for myself.I should also tell you that I retired about 18 months ago after a 37 year career in Information Technology and still do a little consulting. I have bought, built and managed Windows Servers and desktops since 1994. I am comfortable in doing almost anything IT, just do not have any experience with this product.

One of the great new features in Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (SBS2011E) is the ability to backup the system drives easily. This was a feature that Windows Home Server v1 was generally lacking and is something that users have taken for granted at this point with newer, more full featured versions of Windows Server platforms. Microsoft has been doing a great job of making server administration easy for the novice in SBS2011E and Windows Home Server 2011 and includes a simple dashboard interface to create backups. This guide will show, using the current beta version of SBS2011E both the easy way to configure backups and the more full featured, but harder way.

I just saw win home server on newegg tonight for $99.00 and im debating weather its worth it. it has a 8gb mem cap and my rig is at 16 gb now. I will be rung drivepool and scanner with any os I chose but I haven't used 2011 ever. I loved WHS V1 but my current test rig is going strong and im lookin g into a xeon down the road. unless my needs can be met with a simpler machine? all my workstations are win 7 home or win 8.1

im gonna take the SERVER plunge for windows 10 if I like I may purchase this and run it with drive pool / scanner. im expecting support for my upgraded XEON server.. yay cant wait to think a Xeon 1275v3 and 32 GB ddr 3 2400 ram on a ssd should be slightly fast.

I have DLed the tech preview of W10 Server because I know at some stage I'll have to migrate from WHS2011 and this is a good way to learn (I also have an old spare PC I'll use as a client). But I have to say, sofar, a lot of mumbo jumbo for me that, as a home user, I'm not sure I should be interested in. That is the gr8 thing about WHS2011: As long as you can live with its limitations, it is _really_ simple to use and maintain IMHO. Yes, it can only do 8GB, but who cares? (I do, different story). For a home server it should not matter. Yes, it has a certain 2 TB limit but that is managable for quite some time in fact. I can have 6TB of data and an OS drive and back it all up using Server Backup. No, it does not do VM.

It worked like a charm for my on my 490. Yes, it is a bit tedious that you have to wipe yje first drive but besides that Ihaven't had any issue. Hmm, just realised that I forgot that WHS can't find a driver for a Silicon Image SATA driver. I did find a link for a Win7 x64 driver for it.I bought 3 WD 2 TB green caviars and built a RAID5 with it by logging onto the console. However, it seems that you can't used the built-in server backup feature if you do this. Changed it back to 3 drives of 2 TB. The 3rd is used for server backups now. I did enable encryption on one of the drives. We'll see how things go with that.Sofar I am quite happy with WHS2011 on the HP with 2 GB RAM. Too bad that the 3rd led keeps blinking blue.... I'll have to live with that. Now I'm thinking about hooking up my USB printer. See if it'll share that as well like Server 2008 R2 itself does fine.

Glad it works Bob... and yeah, our backup only backs up to 2TB volumes. this is a windows server limitation that we inherited. if you do the printer, make sure you add the X86 drivers as well, otherwise your 32-bit clients won't get the driver.

Thanks for this tutorial. For those who are not so good with computers there's a alternative way to install WHS on a HP Mediasmart.Take the HD out of the bay where you want to install the OS on.Hook it up an other computer (no other drives can be attached) which supports x64 cpu's.Now you can see what you are doing. And enter trough the setup. When the computers reboots for the first time shut it down and put the HD back in you mediasmart.Turn it on and wait for about 10 min then find out which ip the homeserver getst and connect to it with your browser. The rest shows it way.Hopefully someone finds this usefull.Greetings,Wizzz

Found my answer-turn on view of hidden files in folders and drives in control panel to see what my DATA D: drive contained. It contained my shared folders-video, pictures, and music from WHS v1. Nice!Lesson learned the hard way-Remove drives before installing WHS 2011. Still have problems with backing up my iMac to my server. The IMac time machine backup does not see the server as an option. Also Dashboard did not get installed.I am able to stream music, pictures, and video to my PS3 and to my Apple TV via iTunes installed on my WHS 2011 server. No video hesitations! My ex495 with upgraded CPU, intel e75 and 4GB memory seems to run cooler now and isn't so busy as was V1. Just need to take care of blinking status light and iMac problems. Otherwise I love WHS 2011.

I assume wipe the partitions = delete them using Computer->Manage->Storage->Disk Management, selecting the partition, and hitting delete...tried that, and a second time with a different hard drive, and a third with a usb dvd drive. One possible issue: my server was having some issues, so it was actually in recovery mode when I decided to switch to 2011 (that was the primary motivation for the install)...does that change some bios setting that would keep it from installing? It seemed like a pain to do a system restore with the old OS and then another with the new one, but I can try it.Thanks for the prompt reply!

Hi Sean, first thanks for all the info. I tried doing the install directly on the server but could not get it to work. I guess my auto response file is bad. So i took a drive out and connected it to a regular machine and did the entire install and applied all windows updates for WHS 2011. However when i remove the drive from desktop machine and put it back into my EX490 i get blinking aqua fora bit and then it goes to solid red health light. If i put the drive back onto my desktop server boots just fine. Do you have any idea why i cant get my WHS 490 to boot with WHS 2011.

Sean, Looks like the format of the cfg.ini file has changed between beta and RTM. this link has a RTM version of the file you can use. -to-install-windows-home-server-vail-from-a-usb-flash-drive/

>>Will the WHS 2011 work on HP X310 DataVault?Yes. Even with the default 2GB of RAM (much to my pleasent surprise!), and even when running a CrashPlan Proe server on it too!Do yourself a favor - skip the USB/Answer file stuff and scroll up to the post from Wienen on pulling the system drive, installing WHS on another machine, then putting the system drive back into your DataVault once the OS is fully installed. Skip the installatino of updates and skip activating the server until AFTER you put the drive back in your DataVault and boot WHS up on your DataVault.I've upgraded an Atom based DataValt and an EX490 by installing WHS on a desktop computer and then putting the system drive in the HP box once the install is done and it worked perfectly both times. I highly recommend it!

For those that are looking for fix to the blinking health led, I just installed the add-in "Lights Management for Windows Home Server 2011" - -lights-management-for-windows-home-server-2011/ and it fixed my blinking health led along with enabling the drive leds.

Hi,Thanks for this perfect guide.I'm not expert in this area and I have 3 questions, let me first explain the situation. I have 4 hdd as displayed in the disk Mang.disck0 C:Sys and D:Datedisck1 Datadisck2 Datadisck3 Datasome people say that disck0 D:Date, is a client backup and I'm not sure of that.anyway, the questions:1) when I remove disk0 and format C: partition and then install WHS11 as the steps you provide. would that delete all my stored data in the ex495? if yes then what the solutions i have.2) I found whs11 dvd on amazon but im not sure if this is the full version or not. -Server-64-bit-English-Builder/dp/B0050TVAWS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354717647&sr=8-1&keywords=windows+home+server+20113) since hp stopped supporting the ex495. how I'll find the drivers for the whs11, or is it the same?sorry for the long questions, thanks in advance.Nawaf 2ff7e9595c
